Delicious banh mi sandwich from Bánh mì Saigon Sandwiches & Bakery

Bánh mì sandwiches were first introduced into my diet when I was visiting a friend in New York City. Low on cash my friend insisted I go try these curious little Vietnamese sandwiches. After returning to Greensboro I did much research to find my new favorite meal. All signs (reviews) pointed to High Point Road’s Bánh mì Saigon Sandwiches & Bakery, so Olivia and I went to investigate/pig out.

This place may be the best kept secret in Greensboro, and I don’t say that lightly. Choose from a wide range of Vietnamese meats in fresh baked French bread and topped with fresh cilantro pickled daikon radish and carrots. All these ingredients are finished with a special spicy mayonnaise. It’s the several layers of texture and flavor in each bite of the soft French bread that make this the best $3 sandwich you’ve ever had. It’s time to kick that $5 foot long jingle out of your head. You can’t get a fast food meal for that much, let alone a large Vietnamese sandwich made fresh.

My favorite sandwich is easily the curry chicken, which is one of their few $3.50 entrees (for the extra .50 cents, I’ll splurge). Diced chicken cooked in a creamy curried sauce, and toasted inside freshly baked baguette. With a variety of meats like pork, chicken, and steak combined with authentic Vietnamese flair, you can’t really go wrong. That said, Bánh mì does also provide vegetarian options, so don’t let the menu you fool you. You just have to ask for a tofu substitute and Kim will be willing to help. As an alternative you could always try a sandwich with just the vegetables.

Vegetarian spring rolls

The bakery also offers various other delicious treats. Pictured here are some specially ordered vegetarian spring rolls.

For the heat seeking diner, you may want to ask for the special chili hot sauce that comes in a small plastic container with large red chili flakes. The addition of the chili sauce doesn’t take away from the sandwich’s original deliciousness, but only compliments and gives an added kick.

The bakery also has a wide selection of authentic rice puddings, bubble teas, and bottled beverages to enjoy with your meal. With about a dozen different bubble tea flavors frapped with tasty tapioca pearls at the bottom, it’s definitely worth trying out.

Because this is such a value-priced menu, Bánh mì has a $5 credit/debit minimum, but it’s still worth it. Get a side of fresh spring rolls or a bubble tea with your sandwich, and it will probably still be half as expensive as a sub at Jimmy John’s. The location off of High Point Road may not be the nicest, for quality sandwiches at $3 a piece can’t be beat. Although Bánh mì doesn’t deliver, they do take orders over the phone for pick up.
