I hate Valentine’s Day.

I hate chocolate, flowers, and bullshit like that. I might be the Scrooge of Valentine’s Day.

I’m not bitter, by any means. I haven’t been single on Valentine’s Day in a couple of years. The past few Valentine’s, I’ve told my significant others to please avoid the frilly, hot pink section of Harris Teeter, and, for God’s sake, please don’t stick me in your car with a nice restaurant as the destination. They ignored my wishes, of course – dismissing them as though I had truly wanted the overly sweet card with the overly sweet chocolate, right before they took me out to some quintessential Valentine’s dinner.

So I’ve compiled a very small, very last minute list of things for people like me (and not so like me) to do today.

First, and most important, you can head downtown with Laila Nur to the corner of Elm and Market and decorate the vicinity with streamers, hearts, and free kisses and hugs. This is an event to raise awareness of Amendment One, which would limit the rights of LGBTQ couples, domestic partnerships, and civil unions. The attendees of this event plan to hand out heart shaped cards with Amendment One information on them. This event is 4-6 PM downtown – corner of Elm and Market.

After you leave there, you can head over to the Green Bean for a discussion on protecting NC families – especially LGBTQ. It’s a family friendly event, featuring music by the Allison King Duo, treats from Clara Marie’s Authentic Southern Bakery and Chocolate Pops, as well as crafts and guest speakers. The event will be happening from 6-7:30 PM at the Green Bean.

Last but not least, continue the Tuesday tradition of the Flatiron’s Open Mic Night, hosted by Matty Sheets. Whether you’re singing or listening, there’s sure to be plenty of too-sweet love songs and bitter breakup ballads. Along with the regulars, Matt Frye will grace us with his presence for a couple of songs. Open Mic signup starts at 9:30 PM, music at 10 PM.

So if you’re a Scrooge like me, don’t let it get in the way of having a good time today/tonight. You can get informed and inform others about Amendment One, and end your evening with music. Happy Valentine’s Day, motherfuckers, don’t be too bitter.
