Separation Anxiety

Roxie Sleeping

The Humane Society of the United States says that “Dogs with separation anxiety exhibit distress and behavior problems when they’re left alone.” (Note: here’s more on how to help your dog overcome noise phobia.) Well, I don’t think Roxie has separation anxiety but I feel like I do! Earlier this month I spent my first night away from her when I travelled out of town for a wedding. Thankfully, I have a few people to call on that are excited to watch her if I have to leave town. One of my friends with pet-sitting experience said that she would be thrilled to watch Roxie.

I have to be honest. I was nervous when it came time to leave Roxie; I wasn’t sure how she would do in somebody else’s care. In order to break the ice and ease stress for Roxie and my friend, I brought over a few of Roxie’s toys, her food already measured out per serving, treats, and several articles of clothing. Actually, wearing dog clothes tend to make a lot of dogs feel more secure if they do suffer from a lot of anxiety.

After I left my friend’s place, I gave her a call and she said that Roxie whined a little but was soon playing games and enjoying herself. That night, it felt a little weird but I found comfort in the fact that my friend had taken great care of other dogs. Roxie was in good hands.

The next day, I picked Roxie up and everything was indeed fine! It’s nice to have friends who are dependable dog-sitters, but they’re a luxury many pet owners don’t have. That brings me to my next point – Roxie is at her first day of Daycare at Dog Days! Look out for my next post for a review.
