Record Store Day at CFBG!!!

“It’s gonna be a great day and we look forward to seeing each and every one of you. This is all about supporting your local record store and you guys do that better than most. This is a celebration for us all. Record Store Day is here!,” says all around record nerd, CFBG vinyl curator, and RSD organizer, Jack Bonney.

“In my opinion on this day every single person should at least hold a record in their hand. For many they will never go back.”

Bonney, and his record store cohort, Max Benbassat are putting that notion in place as CFBG [a venue and artspace operated by Benbassat which recently celebrated its third anniversary] celebrates Record Store Day. The nationwide celebration, which helps promote independent record stores throughout the world, is in its fifth year and growing. To make their Record Store Day experience unique, live DJs and bands will play until 9pm (read more here) AND CFBG will be hosting several exciting giveaways and killer deals all day long.

So, without further ado, here’s a few words from Mr. Bonney on giveaways, releases, hot deals, and so much more…

The first 100 customers to purchase a record(s) will have their choice of either the exclusive Sub Pop RSD CD featuring some unreleased tracks by Beach House, Shabazz Palaces, Retribution Gospel Choir, and 13 other Sub Pop Artists.

Or you can choose to pick up a Drag City Record bag which apparently carries some promo stuff. So just be one of the first hundred customers and you’re going away with your choice.

Other giveaways include the first customer to purchase any release on Daptone Records will receive a 5 x 7 Daptone decal and record divider.

The first customer to purchase anything by Bonnie Prince Billy will receive an exclusive RSD condom designed by Billy himself. [If anyone knows Bonney, a Bonnie Prince Billy giveaway should come as little surprise.]

We’ll have exclusive RSD only limited releases available from:

Arcade Fire, Atmosphere, Battles, Beach House, Richard Buckner, Carolina Chocolate Drops, Flogging Molly, Futurebirds, LCD Soundsystem, M. Ward, Mastodon, Misfits, St. Vincent, White Stripes, and more!

We MUST STRESS that for some of these we only have EXTREMELY LIMITED copies of, and by limited in some cases we mean just ONE. Therefore these will be sold on a first come first serve basis. We can not hold anything anymore. The only holds will be for those customers that responded to the original email.

The RSD stuff is actually secondary to the amazing selection of new & used records we’ll be busting out for the very first time. We’re talking about some classics and new classics you don’t even know about yet. All genres covered from Rock, Indie, Hip Hop, Soul, Funk, Jazz, Blues, and a nice diversity of World Music. A little something for everyone. We’ll have the listening stations set up in the bar & store for listening to the used goods.

Chis Faller of the Hush Sound calls record stores, “the last refuge for those who are looking for music that’s outside of the box or outside of this decade.”

CFBG will be discounting a decent amount of records that have been in the store since the opening. Some items will be discounted as much as 50%.

“Dolla Balla Crates” – We will be unleashing some killer records for only $1. Let it be known that many of these records are beat up, but in some cases the cover is almost worth more than a $1. Don’t hesitate to be a Dolla Balla. Henry Rollins warns, “if we lose the independent record store, we lose big. Every time you buy your records at one of these places, it’s a blow to the empire.” Shell out a buck and become a Dolla Balla hero.

According to Ziggy Marley, “record stores keep the human social contact alive it brings people together. Without the independent record stores the community breaks down.”

That sense of community [and need for a solid independent record store in Greensboro] lead to Benbassat teaming up with  Bonney [fresh from his long tenure of record selection as GM for WUAG] and incorporated the record store element into CFBG (also known as “Center for A Better Greensboro) toward the end of 2011. Together, they hope to spread the vinyl groove and help boost the wealth of musical talent and culture found in Greensboro. Afterall, Mr. Johnny B. Goode (aka Chuck Berry) notes, “music is an important part of our culture and record stores play a vital part in keeping the power of music alive.”

Be at CFBG on Saturday from 11am until 9pm to help the dudes who aim to give us a better Greensboro. As Nick Hornby says, “record stores can’t save your life. But they can give you a better one.”
